In one of the performances of his life,
Chris Dobey averaged over 102 to dump out the 2018 World Champion
Rob Cross and book his spot in the quarter-finals of the
PDC World Darts Championship for the first time in his career.
Having lost in last-set deciders at this stage of the tournament in three of the last four years, Dobey was determined to be the one celebrating victory this time around. "Finally getting over that hurdle is just another tick off the list," Dobey says. "Match darts when the crowd is going like that behind you, it's hard but I got over the line."
When Dobey and Cross faced off in the opening round of the World Matchplay back in July of this year, it looked for all the world like Dobey was set for a famous win when he led 8-2. On that occasion however, Cross came roaring back and eventually pulled off a remarkable comeback to emerge victorious 11-9. Going into this rematch, Dobey admitted he was itching to set the record straight. "Rob beat me in the Matchplay and that was in the back of my mind," he says. "I wanted a bit of revenge and obviously having thrown it away the way I did last time it was nice to play well and get over the line."
Lying in wait for Chris Dobey in the quarter-finals is none other than three-time former world champion and the bookies' favourite to lift the Sid Waddell trophy this time around, Michael van Gerwen. After finally getting his first victory over the Dutchman at the European Championships and having already defeated two former world champions in Rob Cross and Gary Anderson, Hollywood as he is known is full of belief. However as he willingly admits himself, "Michael van Gerwen will take some beating."
