Michael van Gerwen made a big jump on the European Tour Order of Merit after taking the title at the German Darts Grand Prix on Monday night. With this title, 'Mighty Mike' seized the top prize of 30,000 pounds.
In Munich, he showed great form with four 100+ averages in five matches. In his first match against Kim Huybrechts, Van Gerwen survived three match darts, but after the 6-5 victory over the Belgian, 'Mighty Mike' also beat Ryan Searle (6-1), Ryan Joyce (6-4) and Josh Rock (7-2). Van Gerwen also notched a nine darter in his match against Searle. Then in a Dutch final he was too strong for Gian van Veen with 8-5.
Van Gerwen had still started the tournament as No. 16 on the European Tour Order of Merit, having reached the semifinals once at the first three Euro Tours of the season and stranded in the second round of the Belgian Darts Open. He was forced to withdraw from the International Darts Open due to injury.
Now the three-time world champion is in a tie for second place with Luke Littler at 38,500 pounds. Nathan Aspinall is number one with 42,000 pounds. 'The Asp' won the European Darts Trophy earlier this season, while he was also in the final at the International Darts Open. Aspinall did not compete in the German Darts Grand Prix last Easter weekend and thus could not scoop any prize money.
Losing finalist Van Veen took home 15,000 pounds for reaching the final. With 21,000 pounds, he is now also firmly in the top-10 in a neat sixth spot. In addition to the aforementioned top three, he also has to beat Stephen Bunting and Ross Smith. The top-10 is further completed by Mike de Decker, Martin Schindler, Gerwyn Price and Ryan Joyce. World number one Luke Humphries is tied with Josh Rock for 12th place. The 32 best players at the end of the season get to compete in the European Darts Championship in Dortmund.
