The PDC
European Tour began in 2012, which means we are now in the fourteenth season of this series of tournaments held across Europe. While there were only five events in its inaugural year, the calendar now features fourteen tournaments. Prize money has also steadily increased over the years.
This past weekend, the fourth event of the 2025 PDC European Tour took place in Munich. The title at the
German Darts Grand Prix went to
Michael van Gerwen, who defeated his fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen 8–5 in the final.
With that victory, Van Gerwen has now won at least one European Tour event in eleven of the tour’s fourteen seasons. Only in 2012, 2020, and 2021 did the 35-year-old Dutchman fail to claim a title on the European Tour. In fact, no player has managed to win at least one event in every single season of the tour.
Also in action last weekend in Munich were Kim Huybrechts and Mensur Suljovic. Their participation puts them in an exclusive group of players who have competed in at least one European Tour event in all fourteen seasons. That group also includes Van Gerwen, along with Peter Wright, Joe Cullen, Michael Smith, James Wade, and William O’Connor.
It wasn’t a particularly enjoyable weekend for Suljovic, who lost 6-5 in the opening round to Krzysztof Ratajski. Huybrechts lasted one round longer but ultimately bowed out in round two, missing match darts before falling to Van Gerwen in a deciding leg thriller 6-5 on Easter Sunday night in Munich.
There’s little time to rest, as the fifth European Tour event of the season kicks off this Friday in Graz. Van Gerwen will be eager to make it back-to-back titles at the Austrian Darts Open. Last year’s champion, Luke Littler, who beat Joe Cullen 8–4 in the final, won’t be defending his title this time around, having opted not to compete in this year’s edition.
