Ricky Evans reached the quarter-final stages of a major tournament for the first time in his career as he defeated Ross Smith 10-7 at the 2019 European Championship.
Smith, coming off a
massive win over Michael van Gerwen, was unable to reproduce the level of play he showed against the world number one. Evans scored better and was more effective on his doubles throughout the match.
Finishes of 112 and a double-double 98 from ‘Rapid’ secured an 9-4 lead over his countryman after thirteen legs. ‘Smudger’ then took three legs in a row, helped by a 124-checkout. It proved to be too little too late, however, as Evans secured a 10-7 win by hitting double 8. It will be the Englishman’s first quarter-final in a major as he takes on Rob Cross on Sunday.
