The brand new European darts champion
Gian van Veen received a warm tribute at his favorite soccer club FC Den Bosch on Friday night. During halftime of the second-tier Dutch league match between FC Den Bosch and De Graafschap, the 23-year-old Dutchman was in the spotlight.
In an atmospheric De Vliert stadium, Van Veen received a standing ovation from both the home and away supporters, in recognition of his impressive performance at the
European Championship.
Last weekend in Dortmund, Van Veen made history by capturing his first major title. The young Dutchman, who is rapidly becoming one of the greatest talents in global darts, defeated reigning world champion Luke Humphries 11-10 in the final. It became a thriller of the highest order, in which Van Veen kept his nerves completely under control and managed to win the deciding leg with ice-cold precision.
His road to the title was anything but easy. Earlier in the tournament, he had already defeated such greats as Michael van Gerwen, Damon Heta, Ryan Searle and Ryan Joyce. With that, Van Veen proved that his rise is no accident, but the result of constant progression and mature play.
Tour of honour through the stadium
FC Den Bosch, where Van Veen can regularly be found in the stands, decided to honour him for this special achievement. At half-time of the match against De Graafschap he was allowed to enter the field for a lap of honour. With loud applause, the dart player visibly showed his gratitude. As icing on the cake, he received an official Den Bosch shirt with the number 180, a nod to the highest score in darts.
For Van Veen, the coming weeks are once again marked by big challenges. On the 8th November begins the Grand Slam of Darts, where he impressed with a quarterfinal finish last year. Later this month awaits the Players Championship Finals, where he faces Humphries again in the opening round - a spicy affair given their recent
European Championship final.

In addition, Van Veen is already assured of participation in the final of the Youth World Cup, which will be played during the same weekend. There he will take on the English star Beau Greaves, who surprisingly eliminated Luke Littler in the semifinals. And then on December 11 the absolute highlight of the darts year begins: the World Darts Championship in London.
With his first major title under his belt and a growing following at home and abroad, 2025 seems to be the year when Gian van Veen finally breaks through to the world top.
