The German Darts Championship continues with Gian van Veen, Daryl Gurney and Andrew Gilding among the leading names through to the Last 16 thus far in Hildesheim.
Van Veen won 6-3 over Robert Owen in the second round by throwing an average of 102.65 and a finish percentage of 75 percent.
Van Veen was immediately alert when Owen failed to hold in the first leg. THe did so with a 14-darter, but then also surrendered his throw. Owen levelled the score with a 100 finish. The Welshman then took the lead with a 15-darter, before Van Veen made it 2-2 with a 13-darter.
Both men then held their own throw again, before Van Veen brilliantly forced another break. The Dutchman was 132 after nine arrows, and via bull, triple 19 and bullseye Van Veen took the seventh leg. This time Van Veen did manage to cash in on the break, as a 117 finish made it 5-3 for Van Veen. The current number 31 on the world ranking list then managed to finish the job by finishing the match with a 14-darter.
It is the third time this season for Van Veen that he has made it to the final day of a Euro Tour tournament. He will play on Sunday afternoon in the third round against the winner of the duel between Peter Wright and Stephen Bunting.
Andrew Gilding made it to the last sixteen of a Euro Tour tournament for the second time this season. The former UK Open champion was too strong for Ryan Joyce in the second round, 6-3.
The 53-year-old Englishman punched a hole early in the match by taking a 4-1 lead thanks to a 124 finish and a 13-darter. Joyce missed chances moments later to cut the deficit to 3-4 before Gilding hit the double 5 for a 5-2 lead. Joyce then briefly kept herself in the match with a 108 checkout, before Gilding made the final score 6-3 with a 76 finish in the ninth leg.
Daryl Gurney also secured a spot in the last sixteen at the Euro Tour tournament in Hildesheim. 'Superchin' proved a size too big for Stephen Burton at the last 32 and triumphed 6-1.
After two legs the score was still 1-1, but then the Northern Irishman strung the legs together. A 17-darter and a 13-darter gave Gurney a break lead, before he saw Burton miss three chances to make it 2-3. Gurney ruthlessly punished these misses with a 152 finish, then made it 5-1 via a 14-darter. The two-time major champion then pulled out the win with a 16-darter.
