Andrew Gilding and
Callan Rydz took full advantage of their call-up at the
European Darts Matchplay. The pair had not originally qualified for the Euro Tour tournament in Riesa, but they were allowed to compete at the last minute due to cancellations by Gerwyn Price and Jim Williams.
Gilding prevailed in a shaky match 6-4 against Darryl Pilgrim. Gilding's scoring was poor, but his finishes (75 percent on the doubles) were strong. He will take on Dirk van Duijvenbode in the second round.
Rydz won 6-3 over Stephen Burton in his first round match. He thus sealed a duel with thirteenth seed Martin Schindler at the last 32.
Mickey Mansell caused a surprise by eliminating Matt Campbell 6-3. The Northern Irishman will be Rob Cross' opponent in the next round.
