Daryl Gurney will not be in the Premier League for the first time since 2017 when the weekly roadshow kicks off and he hopes to use the disappointment of not being involved as a catalyst.
Gurney has not been in the best form over the past year but has shown some glimmers of a return to his best which he hopes to continue.
“It’s my own fault, the writing was on the wall. It wasn’t about the Ladbrokes Masters at all, I just hadn’t done enough for a couple of years," said Gurney to Darts World.
“Missing out on the Premier League will give me extra hunger. Sport is all about how you react to defeat and victory.
“That’s disappointing none more so than for myself trust me. But I believe I can fix that and I’m on the road to doing that.
“There’s a certain amount of being in the right place at the right time in sport and definitely darts. Sometimes the luck swings for you. I don’t feel it has for a while for me. But that’s life.
“The Grand Prix went my way in 2017 and I felt I played great in the Players Championship to beat Michael Van Gerwen in the final.
“I’ve reached the semis of the Matchplay, Premier League, Euros and UK Open since but not managed to get over the line.
“Perhaps the biggest frustration is that I felt I was playing better at the start of 2020 when i reached the UK Open semis. I then went completely off the boil again.
“The Worlds went down to a last leg decider with Gerwyn Price and I missed a chance and he took it. That’s the difference, that’s how fine the lines are these days.”
