Daryl Gurney is through to the Last 16 at the 2020/21 PDC
World Darts Championship with a tie to come against Vincent van der Voort after an impressive victory over Chris Dobey.
Gurney has continued his resurgent form as of late with a 101 average, five 180's and 45% on the doubles as he sets down his own benchmark in being a major player at this year's World Championship.
All five legs in the opening set went with throw in a high
quality start and Gurney pinched the opening set 3-2.
The holds continued despite Dobey having to take multiple
visits to claim the lead. From a 148, Gurney left it handy on double 16 with
Dobey missing bull for a 130. ‘Superchin’ pinned it in clinical fashion to
break.
Dobey looked for an immediate fightback with a 180 to begin
the fourth leg. But Gurney pinned one at a pivotal time to leave 47 and it was
a brilliant 11-darter to go 2-0 up.
Dobey missed double eighteen for a 150 checkout but was
backed with Gurney not able to hit 147 and as a result ‘Hollywood’ hit the
front with a break.
But Gurney pinned a 14 darter to break straight back as he
aimed to go into a 3-0 sets lead, he wired one dart at tops for the set and
Dobey returned for 2-2.
Gurney left 50 from a 134 but Dobey had the chance to half
the deficit but missed double 13 for an 81 checkout and Gurney returned for
double 16 and a 3-0 lead.
Dobey missed a chance for a 112 checkout to hold but Gurney
missed the same target and Dobey was back for double eight.
It was now or never for Dobey and he couldn’t take his
opportunity to break with Gurney returning for double eight.
Dobey held to go 2-1 up but if Gurney could hold, it would
go to a decider in which he would have the darts.
Gurney missed double 16 to hold and Dobey pinned double 10
off a perfect dart at double to claim a set back.
Gurney led with a 78 checkout to go 1-0 up and left 44 in
case Dobey missed 120 which he did and as a result he was one away from
victory. He once again pinned 78 to move through in a 4-1 sets win.
