Wright ended up with a 103 average alongside the perfect leg but was edged out in an 8-6 defeat to 'Superchin' who bounces back after an out of sorts display against Michael Smith.
He made an excellent start going 4-0 up which included a 164 checkout. Wright made his way back into proceedings but even then, Gurney's commanding start proved pivotal.
He went onto 5-2 and despite Wright putting back to back legs together including a break to make it 5-4; he replied with a 141 checkout to lead 6-4.
There was another twist in the tale as Wright made it 6-6 but again Gurney went ahead this time to claim at least a point and from there he sealed it in a quality opener.
