Michael van Gerwen managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship just before New Year's Eve. 'Mighty Mike' was too strong in the last 16 with a 4-2 win over Dutch Swede Jeffrey de Graaf. In the quarterfinals this afternoon, he will take on Callan Rydz, who beat Robert Owen 4-3 in the last 16. Vincent van der Voort noticed that Van Gerwen is further ahead than he had hoped.

Van Gerwen achieved over 102 average against De Graaf. "I thought he was really good. The first two sets he was lord and master actually," said Vincent van der Voort in the Sportnieuws.nl podcast Darts Draait Door. "Then Jeffrey de Graaf comes back really well with that third set, throws I think 111 average."

"That also had to do with De Graaf, who was playing really fantastic. But then it's 2-2, they go into the break and how he picks it up I think that's great class. Scoring-wise it was really complete the whole match."

Faster than hoped

"At some point the doubles also fall and then he's just further ahead than we had hoped," Van der Voort continued. "Only positive. This match was at least an 8. 102 average, good on his doubles, 4-2 victory, mentally strong. What more could you want in the last sixteen?"

So Van der Voort is mostly positive, but still sees a potential pitfall. "It just looks good. But he has to keep that focus, stay with it," he said.

"That maybe he needs to be better and more complete the next game. You actually shouldn't be satisfied with what you do, still want something better every time. That's easy to say, but at least it's about staying focused and really going for it every game."
