Wessel Nijman turned heads last weekend with a run to the semi-finals of the Euro Tour event in Rosmalen, finishing as the top-performing Dutch player. But despite his success, the young talent came under fire from former pro Vincent van der Voort, who called Nijman’s decision-making during the tournament “incredibly stupid.”
The reason? Nijman chose to drive back and forth to Venlo on Saturday afternoon – in the middle of the Euro Tour weekend – to attend the conclusion of the Dutch Super League, the country’s top amateur competition. Speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast, Van der Voort was left stunned by the news.
“I’d only just heard about it, that he was there,” said a visibly surprised Van der Voort. “I found that really astonishing. Just unbelievable. Sure, he’s still young and can get away with it now, but honestly – it’s incredibly stupid.”
Van der Voort highlighted the risks of fatigue, distraction, and additional strain during a key tournament.
“You’re on the go all day, then back in the car, and you still need to perform in the evening... I get that it’s fun, and congrats to him, but it’s just not smart.”

Even though Nijman reached the semi-finals, Van der Voort believes the incident shows the young Dutchman isn’t yet acting with full professionalism.
“If you’ve got a Tour Card with the PDC and you want to break into the world’s top 16, you don’t go to the Super League,” he said. “You don’t drive to Venlo in the afternoon when you’ve got a Euro Tour match that evening.”
Van der Voort made clear he’s not directly blaming the Sunday loss on the trip, but sees it as part of a bigger picture.
“It shows you’re not yet a full professional. And if you really want to be among the elite, that’s something that has to change.”
