The 32 participants in the 2025
European Championship will compete for a total prize fund of £600,000. The 18th edition of the tournament will take place from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th October at the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund.
Qualification for the European Championship is based on the final standings of the PDC European Tour Order of Merit. In 2025, fourteen European Tour events were held across various locations throughout Europe, with players earning ranking points based on their performances. The top 32 players have been invited to take part in the tournament.

In the early years, the event was dominated by Phil Taylor, who claimed the title in each of the first four editions. His 2009 victory went down in the history books, as he posted the highest tournament average ever recorded by a winner — an astonishing 111.54. Taylor remains the only player to have won a major with a tournament average exceeding 110.
In 2012, Simon Whitlock became the second name on the trophy, followed by Adrian Lewis, who lifted the title in 2013. Dutchman
Michael van Gerwen then embarked on a period of dominance, remaining unbeaten at the tournament from 2014 through to 2017. James Wade brought that run to an end in 2018, before Rob Cross claimed the title in 2019. Peter Wright emerged victorious in 2020, and Cross reclaimed the crown in 2021 by defeating Van Gerwen in the final.
In 2022, there was a surprise winner as Ross Smith captured his maiden major title. Wright returned to the top in 2023, becoming only the fourth player to win the European Championship more than once. The 2024 edition produced a remarkable final between Ritchie Edhouse and Jermaine Wattimena, with Edhouse ultimately securing the title at Wattimena’s expense.

When Taylor won the inaugural tournament in 2008, the prize fund stood at a modest £200,000, with £50,000 awarded to the winner. This increased in 2014, when the total pot rose to £250,000, though the winner's share only grew slightly to £55,000. The following year saw another boost, bringing the total fund to £300,000, with £65,000 going to the champion.
A significant jump came in 2016, as the prize fund was raised to £400,000, and the winner took home £100,000. In 2019, the total purse increased once more to £500,000, with £120,000 for the champion. The most recent increase came in 2023, when the fund reached £600,000 — although the winner’s share remained at £120,000. The extra money instead benefited those eliminated in earlier rounds.
All 32 players are guaranteed at least £7,500 in
prize money — the amount awarded to those who exit in the first round. Reaching the second round secures £15,000, while quarter-finalists are assured of taking home £25,000. A semi-final berth earns players £40,000, the runner-up receives £60,000, and the champion walks away with the top prize of £120,000.
