Luke Humphries and
Luke Woodhouse are the first two players to secure a spot in the last eight at the
Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest. Sunday night they will play each other in the quarter-finals.
A visibly injured Humphries made short work of
Martin Schindler. 'Cool Hand Luke' had woken up Sunday morning with cramps in his back and had visited a doctor at the playing venue just prior to his match.
The Englishman was found fit enough to play the match, but it did not go by any means wholeheartedly. Especially retrieving the darts into the dartboard went with difficulty for Humphries, who did, however, deliver an excellent match.
He broke Schindler in the first leg with a 15-darter and then took a 3-0 lead via two 14-darters. Next, "Cool Hand Luke" fired a 10-darter into the board for 4-0. Schindler led off with the fifth leg before Humphries made it 5-1 with a 16-darter. A 14-darter from Humphries then ended the match.
Woodhouse did himself a huge favour by winning 6-2 against
Peter Wright. This enabled 'The Shed' to reach the quarter-finals of a Euro Tour tournament for the first time in his career and he holds the last qualification spot for the World Grand Prix.
Woodhouse loses this spot when Gian van Veen reaches the quarterfinals later in the afternoon in the Hungarian capital. Van Veen will then take on Damon Heta.
The high stakes seemed to bother Woodhouse little. Through two 14-darters and a 12-darter, he quickly gained a comfortable 3-0 lead against Wright. 'Snakebite' threw out 76 for 3-1, but then saw Woodhouse run out to 5-1 via a 13-darter and a 75 check-out.
Wright then managed to extend the match with a 108 finish after two missed match darts by Woodhouse, but then failed to break Woodhouse. The Englishman then dragged out the victory with a 56 finish.
