Gian van Veen suffered a costly defeat at the
Hungarian Darts Trophy. The dart player from Poederoijen lost Sunday afternoon in the third round to
Damon Heta (6-4) and therefore misses the World Grand Prix.
With his victory over Nathan Aspinall Saturday night, Van Veen briefly held the final qualifying spot for the World Grand Prix. However, because Luke Woodhouse managed to win Sunday afternoon over Peter Wright, Van Veen fell just outside the qualifying spots based on countback.
The Dutchman managed to reverse a break deficit against Heta twice. Van Veen was broken again in the ninth leg after he missed a dart on the double. Heta posted his third break via double 16 and then sealed the match with a 16-darter.
In the quarterfinals, the Australian will take on
Gerwyn Price. 'The Iceman' was responsible for the elimination of defending champion
Joe Cullen in the last sixteen. The topper of this afternoon was won 6-4 by Price.
