Luke Littler provided the best performance of the second round at the 2024 Flanders Darts Trophy on Saturday night, defeating Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena 6-1 thanks to an average of 111.13.
After five legs, Wattimena was averaging 110 himself, but was looking at a 4-1 deficit. Before that, the 17-year-old Littler had thrown two 14-darters and a 12-darter, among other things. In between, Wattimena threw a 107 checkout for a 12-darter.
In the sixth leg, Wattimena missed five chances to make it 2-4, after which Littler punished these misses hard with a 105 finish. Wattimena did not recover from that blow. Littler thundered on and put a 13-darter to make it 6-1.
''I knew I played well and I had to, because Jermaine threw everything at me,'' Littler reflected in his post-match interview on stage afterwards. "I couldn't afford to step off the gas because Jermaine was right behind me every time, but I took my chances.''
Littler has now won seven matches in a row on Belgian soil. 'The Nuke' managed to win the Belgian Darts Open in Wieze early this season on his Euro Tour debut. On Sunday, the 17-year-old teenage sensation will play Dirk van Duijvenbode in the third round, looking to continue this winning run. "I love playing in Belgium. The crowds are amazing here and they just love their darts,'' Littler concluded.
