John Part is one of the biggest names in darts history. The now 58-year-old Canadian and three-time world champion is currently making an attempt to recapture his PDC Tour Card this week at Q-School.
Part, who lost his Tour Card in early 2019, is currently mostly active as a commentator for Sky Sports. Such as at the past World Darts Championship, where he enjoyed the final between Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen. "Van Gerwen clearly wasn't at his best from the start of the match, but he kind of got himself going. He was down in a pretty big hole four sets and he was trying his hardest out there, you could tell Michael was. But Luke managed to match every increase in play from Michael pretty much," Part assesses on the latest episode of the Weekly Dartscast. "
Just before the start of the World Darts Championship, Donna, the wife of Wayne Mardle, passed away. Mardle has been one of the regular voices on Sky Sports for many years, alongside Part, but was a notable omission from this year's broadcast. "It was just terribly difficult in general just forget the darts. It's just knowing Wayne and Donna and you know, what they meant to each other and how they function in their lives together, it's just so sad and yeah, a very difficult time in that sense," Part reflects. "I think everyone involved with the broadcast kind of felt severely deflated and maybe not as motivated. But you know, it starts and then you get into it and of course, darts is a great tonic for the soul in a lot of ways. It drags you back to life a bit and we did carry on without Wayne, but certainly with Wayne in our hearts and we'll all be looking forward to to seeing him return."
Q-School
As mentioned, Part is heading back to Q-School again this year in the hopes of securing a fairytale return to the PDC Pro Tour. "I wouldn't mind getting another crack at a World Championship and just see what I can do. I got inspired by an old friend there, Paul Lim and we know he got to the final of the WDF one at what, 70. So I feel like I'm a little bit lazy if at 58 I'm not at least trying!"
Ted Evetts, Kai Gotthardt and David Cameron were among the latest 16 players to progress to the Final Stage of PDC Qualifying Schools on Tuesday.
