In a group that Dirk van Duijvenbode dubbed as the most open during this year's Grand Slam of Darts, he got over the line in a deciding leg win over Martin Schindler which by his own admission, he should have won earlier.
"At some points it looked like it was going to be an easy win and at some points, it looked like I was going to lose it so I was very happy to win in the end. Last leg is a flip of a coin, I should have done a leg like that earlier on so it could have been an easy win," said Van Duijvenbode post match.
"I think I'm in the most open group where number four, three, two and one, there's no particular favourite. I think me and Rob are having a good year, Martin is having a good year, we're not that far off in the rankings. Then you've got Gawlas who is a great talent. It's good to win the first one."
He also spoke about confidence and how despite some early defeats on the ProTour, he put that down to not really wanting to be there in the first place.
"I wasn't bothered by the two First Round losses, I was willing to take the weekend off but my girlfriend asked if she could come to England. I didn't want to go, it's so busy I want to take a weekend off. I just thought this shouldn't decrease your confidence as I made a semi-final in a TV event the week before."
