Raymond van Barneveld still harbours the ambition to shine on the big stage once more in the twilight of his career. The five-time World Champion remains convinced that another high point at a major televised tournament is within reach.
Between 1998 and 2007, the Dutchman was at the very peak of the sport, winning five world titles. In 2014, he added the Premier League to his honours — his most recent major triumph. Since then, major titles have eluded him, with his last run to a ranked TV semi-final coming at the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts.
Still, the living darts legend is not giving up. “Qualify for the majors and hopefully have some good results there because I haven’t had good results in a major for the last two years," he explained recently. “Then I want a good run in the World Championships.”
Barney has long walked to the stage to Eye of the Tiger by Survivor — a track that perfectly captures his image of resilience and fighting spirit. But he admits to a hint of envy toward Nathan Aspinall’s walk-on song, Mr Brightside by The Killers, which is famously belted out by crowds across the world. “Nathan’s is pretty good. It sweeps up the whole crowd which is perfect of course," says the Dutch icon. “Obviously you want that because it is important to have the crowd with you."
Still, he remains loyal to his own anthem, which holds deep personal meaning. “No but I’m more like Eye of the Tiger," he smiles. “I like Rocky and I know all the films. You know, to always come back after defeat to rise up again and fight back again. So, I have more to relate with that song.”
Looking back over his illustrious career, Van Barneveld doesn’t hesitate when asked for his proudest moment. Not even the iconic win over Phil Taylor in the 2007 World Championship final tops the list — instead, it’s his very first world title in 1998 that means the most. “The first time I became world champion," he recalls fondly. "I had big dreams of course winning the world title and I fell on my knees in 1998. Then it all became reality. That was my biggest dream that came out and I’m still proud and happy with that moment.”
Although his greatest achievements now lie further in the past, Van Barneveld has no intention of slipping quietly into the background. With a wealth of experience and belief in his ability, he’s determined to write one more chapter in a glittering career.
