After Gerwyn Price was at his most ruthless in a 4-0 demolition of former five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld at the PDC World Darts Championship, the Welshman had revenge on his mind. "I wanted to win so he can zip it."
In a fiery post-match interview, Price discussed the fact much of the build-up to the game had been dominated by the fact that he had never previously defeated van Barneveld on the big stage. "I just wanted to get a win over Raymond so he can zip it and not keep talking about how many times he's beat me on tv," Price said. "I don't think he's been on any tv events the last couple of years so it's pretty difficult to beat him if he's not there."
Having come through a tough test against Luke Woodhouse in round 2, Price is now focused on a last-16 matchup against either Ryan Searle or Jose de Sousa. "The game against Luke was a lot more difficult than tonight. Not just because of the score but pressure wise I really didn't want to go out before Christmas," he says. "After Christmas, that's when the tournament starts. So I'm thankful I'm in the last 16."
Having had the crowd against him in recent years, Price did well the keep the Barney Army quiet. Had he failed to do so, the Iceman had a backup plan... playing with headphones on. "If I was up against it with the crowd and if Raymond was in the game a little more. I practised with them the last week and I played really well," Price said. "At least I know now if things don't go to plan and the crowd is on my back I have a backup."
