Martin Schindler came out of top as he played
Ross Smith in the Austrian Darts Open final last night and the latter gave an honest take on his display.
The Englishmen was left 'gutted' after he lost 8-4 to the German in the final. That was his third final that he has not managed to take home the win. He played well in the whole competition beating Peter Wright 6-5, Dirk Van Duijvenbode 6-4 and then Ryan Joyce 7-4, but after going 5-1 down to Schindler he could not bring it back and take home the victory in Austria.
After the final Smith joked: “I’m over the moon. No, I didn’t play well. I was absolutely c**p. I probably rode my luck even reaching the final".
Even though he came out on top in some very hard ties in the competition he still doesn't believe he is playing his best darts.
“I take it on the chin. But it’s great for the rankings. I’m absolutely gutted I haven’t turned up. After last nights final Ross Smith has taken the big positive of his PDC ranking has moved up to 17th but the Englishmen has been left gutted that he still cannot find a way to win the final.
Smith did go on to speak about Schindler saying, “ Martin played really well, fully deserved it. Well deserved winner, 100 per cent. Top professional, top lad. Fair play to him". A very classy response after another horrible feeing in a European final defeat.
Even after another final loss, Smith is still taking away some positives. "Again I’m in the final but not played well. I take that all day long. If I’m not playing well and making finals, then I’m obviously doing something right. I’ll crack on with the next one.” Smith is so close to winning another competition, but will it come soon enough for him?
