Luke Humphries is hunting down the darting triple crown which in the view of the players includes the Premier League which he lost out on at The O2. But he still has the World Matchplay in his sights next month.
He spoke to Online Darts during the US Darts Masters and was quizzed about the so called triple crown with the World Championship, World Matchplay and Premier League seen as the top trio despite the latter being invitation only and not ranked.
"I think the players do yeah. I think the reason why the Premier League is in the top three is it's so hard to win. It's gruelling, most tournaments you're away for a week play six games. In the Premier League, you have to be so consistent for such a long time and you get one chance, one night to win two games. That's why it's such a prestigious tournament to win," said Humphries to Online Darts.
"If it was ranked which I don't think it ever will be, it would be number two even number one as it's so hard to win. That's why the players look at it as the top three tournaments in the calendar. That'd be the three tournaments (World's, Matchplay and Premier League) that I'd love to have by the day I do retire from the darts."
He also spoke about his whirlwind six months since ascending the sport and said that he initially had a bit of imposter syndrome in trying to be something he didn't have to be.
"I think I've had a bit of time to really appreciate what I've achieved a bit more. I think the first couple of months were a little bit of a whirlwind for me. I thought I had to win every game, I thought I had to hit 105 averages every game as I thought people expected that of me as World Champion and World Number One.
"Through experience you learn and you think you don't really have to do that. You just have to make sure that you conduct yourself in a manner that a World Number One is seen so I like to be in that sort of a good manner. I want to be seen as a respectable World Number One. I don't want to show arrogance as that is not inside me. You've got to count your blessings as sometimes darts doesn't go your way. I made myself aware that I'd worked incredibly hard to get where I had, stay humble about it and hopefully the rewards come along the line with more titles."
