Rob Cross returned to winning ways last weekend at the 2024 US Darts Masters in New York City. Voltage took the win over Gerwyn Price in the final.
It seems that victory have given the Englishman a taste for more as well, with Cross vocally targeting the world number one spot currently held by world champion
Luke Humphries. "I think it's the only thing (to target ed.) really when you look at it," Cross tells
Online Darts. "You know, I won the World Championship and obviously at the time I had an incredible Michael van Gerwen in front of me."
A former world champion and World Matchplay winner, Cross has had incredible success since bursting onto the scene nearly a decade ago now. As he mentions though, the world number one spot is still something that has so far eluded him during his career.
"That year I won it the worlds I obviously didn't manage to sort of push on. But no, for me number one would be important," Cross explains. "Obviously to be at the top end and and that number one and be the best player, whether it be for a year or whatever, you can always say that you've been number one for that time. "
In the history of the PDC, very few players have managed to call themselves world number one. Although it's unlikely Cross could get there this year, a good end of the season and another deep World Championship run could him well placed if Luke Humphries slips up. "Thats the pinacle of the game," Cross says of Ally Pally, dreaming of a second world title. "I felt that before but world number one, yeah, I want to see what that feels like and there's a possibility there!"
Cross is this weekend one of the PDC stars at the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen. At that tournament, the current world number six will take on Jeffrey de Graaf in the first round.
