Luke Humphries equalled a Premier League Darts record on Thursday night in Dublin, winning his third consecutive week. Something only Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith had ever done previously.
“I’m really enjoying myself,” said a delighted Humphries post-final. “At the start of the season it felt really tough for me, but now I’m enjoying the game, and that’s when I’m at my best. I feel much more comfortable now. I feel like I belong here, and the last three weeks have just been fantastic."
After wins over Peter Wright, Nathan Aspinall and Michael Smith, Humphries third weekly win in a row now sees him with a comfortable lead at the top of the league table. “I know I’m not unbeatable, but I feel like I’m playing at a level where it’s going to take a big performance to beat me," Humphries says. “I loved tonight. It was the loudest crowd I’ve ever played in front of. The atmosphere was incredible."
The man he leads the league table from is Michael van Gerwen, someone Humphries has a lot of respect for. "I've worked so hard on myself to get to this level but Michael has been at this level - and higher - a lot longer. I'll probably never achieve what he's achieved but I'm getting to a level that I'm really really proud of. I've just to keep working, keep striving and try to get even better if that's possible," he concludes.
