Michael van Gerwen has qualified for the semifinals of the PDC World Darts Championship after a great match. 'Mighty Mike' was too strong for Callan Rydz in the quarter-finals and now gets to face Chris Dobey, who beat Gerwyn Price 5-3 in his quarter-final. Afterwards, Van Gerwen showed his emotions about the loss of his family.
Van Gerwen and Rydz treated the crowd at Alexandra Palace to a great match in which both men threw over 103 average. The crowd also enjoyed numerous 180 scores. It was by far Van Gerwen's best match at this World Championship and it had to be. "God damn it," Van Gerwen opened with a curse of relief to Viaplay. "There was everything in this: drama, good play from both sides, lots of 180s and scoring ability. There was maybe only a nine darter missing. But all in all, this means a lot to me."
"I was so focused those last sets. It's been a long time since I've felt so relaxed during a match. It also never felt like I was going to lose this match."
Emotional
Van Gerwen even had a hard time holding back his tears when his wife and children came up. "They know why I'm gone. I'm here on a mission and everybody knows that. Monday we go on a nice two-week vacation and then I'll catch up on all this time with them."
Before the start of this World Darts Championship, Van Gerwen was not counted among the top favorites for final victory for the first time in years. After a difficult year, with no major titles, many people had lost faith in the 35-year-old Dutchman. "Nobody should lose confidence in me," echoed a combative Van Gerwen, who will take on Dobey in the semifinals. "It looks good, but we are far from there."
