Gerwyn Price has firmly rejected any suggestion that he is part of a "big three" along with Luke Humphries and Luke Littler. The current world No. 12 is in top form this year and has already captured the title at Players Championship Two, as well as two evening victories in Premier League Darts.
Price currently leads the list with the most 110+ averages on the PDC Tour this year (4) and is second in terms of 105+ averages (8). Only Littler is doing better in that area, with an impressive 18 times averaging over 105.
Despite his strong performances and status as one of the best darters today, Price disagrees with the suggestion that he would be part of the "big three" along with world champion Littler and world number one Humphries.
“No, I’m not in any league. I’m in a league of my own," he said to talkSPORT. I don’t put myself in any bracket. I’m not comparing myself to any of the Lukes or Michael.
“When I win, they are not even in my league, so I don’t compare myself to them.”
However, the former world champion acknowledges that he is currently in excellent form and sees himself as a serious contender to win the Premier League Darts for the first time.
“My game is in a positive place. I feel like I can win every game I’m going into. In the past 12 to 18 months that has not been the case.
“As long as I don’t get bored which I do easily sometimes. The main thing is I’m enjoying it and playing well. “If I keep playing like this there is no reason why I can’t keep picking up majors and get into the play-offs for the Premier League.
“Why not I’ve made the final before. Slipped up against Michael [van Gerwen]. That was a time I should have won. But yeah I’m playing well enough to win this.”
Moreover, the darter from Markham is the only player who has managed to beat young phenom Luke Littler six times in a row. According to Price, his mental resilience may play an important role in this successful run against 'The Nuke'.
“No player is in my head. That’s what the difference is with other players. They overthink about it too much. Obviously not Luke Littler he is a great player.
“Whereas I will just go up. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing whether it’s one of the Lukes, Michael, Jonny Clayton or someone in the pub. I will play the exact same. I know if I play my A game I will win nine times out of ten. So I don’t really worry about anyone else. But I think other players do. Maybe Luke [Littler] is thinking that way with me a little bit.”
🗣️ “I’m not comparing myself to the Lukes or Michael van Gerwen. When I win, they are not even in my league. I’m in a league of my own.”
