The Australian Darts Masters gets underway tonight in Wollongong. In this World Series of Darts tournament, Peter Wright will take on home favorite Simon Whitlock in the opening round. Wright hopes to reverse the negative spiral in which he has found himself in recent months in Australia.

The Australian Darts Masters is already the sixth tournament this year of the World Series of Darts. In addition to established names such as Luke Littler, Michael Smith, Luke Humphries, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Rob Cross, Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price, Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock, several local players from Australia and New Zealand will also be in action.

For Peter Wright, this tournament is a unique opportunity to put himself at the forefront again. After all, the 54-year-old Scot has not had the best months of his career, to say the least. The two-time former world champion has dropped to 12th place in the world rankings. Still, he sees signs of improvement. "I definitely feel my A-game will return. I feel like it's coming," declared Wright on PDC.tv

Despite the lack of good results, "Snakebite" did not immediately change anything about his training schedule. "I haven't been practising too much. I'm throwing for about five minutes a day, but I'm hitting everything I'm going for, and I'm enjoying it again."

Ambitious

The Australian Darts Masters is part of an Oceanic double header, so next week there is also the New Zealand Darts Masters. "It would be nice to win both events [Down Under], and I think I can win both.

Incidentally, Wright has been successful in Australia in the past, winning the Melbourne Darts Masters in 2018. He is therefore hoping for new success. "I thought I was going to win the World Matchplay, so my mindset is there; I've just got to do it on the dart board!"
