"I’ve been in the PDC for 12 years now, so less than one a year on average isn’t very good": Gerwyn Price still not satisfied with 10 European Tour titles

Gerwyn Price showcased his class again on Sunday by winning the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen. In a tense final, the Welshman edged past Ross Smith 8-6 to seal his tenth European Tour title. That puts him alongside Michael van Gerwen as the only players with double-digit European tour victories.

Price produced an impressive tournament, averaging just under 100. His campaign started with a solid 6-4 win over Dave Chisnall, in which he immediately fired in five maximums. He then knocked out Chris Dobey by the same 6-4 scoreline, this time with a superb 105.96 average.

Match dart survived

In the quarterfinals, Price had to dig deep against Martin Schindler. The German even had a match dart but failed to convert. Price kept his cool and stole it in a deciding leg. "I was just struggling to get over the winning line. I lost in the last European Tour final that I played in," said Price.
In the semifinals, Price got revenge on Wessel Nijman, who had beaten him earlier this season. This time the Welshman was too strong at 7-4 and booked his second European Tour final of the year.
The showdown with Smith started brightly for Price, who raced into a 3-0 lead. The match swung, though, when Smith reeled off four legs on the spin to move in front. "Ross started smashing the trebles in for fun. I was hanging on and hoping I got more opportunities, and I did."
The turning point came with a 130 checkout from Price, followed by crucial misses from Smith on the doubles. That allowed Price to pull away again and open up a 7-5 lead. Smith refused to fold and cut it to 7-6, but Price kept his nerves in check and closed it out in 14 darts.

Price relieved to win title

Afterwards, Price sounded relieved and satisfied. “Thankfully I won this one, and hopefully it will give me a bit of confidence going forward."
He also reflected on his special milestone. “I’ve been in the PDC for 12 years now, so less than one a year on average isn’t very good!” quipped Price.
With this victory, Price once again underlines his status as one of the absolute elite on the European Tour. He also seems to be finding form at exactly the right time for the upcoming majors. He also marvelled over the crowd who now are very much Team Price. “I never used to have this support, but I’m cherishing every moment I get on stage - it’s brilliant for me and long may it continue!”
