Friday night and the opening round of the 2024 International Darts Open continues to roll on. James Wade, Cameron Menzies and Gian van Veen becoming the latest three names to secure themselves a spot in Saturday's second round.
For multiple-time major winner Wade, a potentially tricky customer in Mike De Decker was the first round opponent. Things proved tight early on as well as despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Wade was pegged back to 3-3. In the end though, it was 'The Machine' who found that extra gear, reeling off the last three legs in succession to secure a 6-3 win, averaging a solid 96.85 in the process.
Next up, Cameron Menzies really impressed. The Scot averaged over the ton (101.2) in an assured display of high scoring against a scrappy Simon Whitlock. Pinning five 180s, Menzies eventually took a 6-4 victory that could've been much more comfortable had his doubling percentage been higher than 25%.
In an all-Dutch tie, it was then a battle of the generations as Gian van Veen faced off against Raymond van Barneveld. After a nip-and-tuck opening few legs, it was the youth of van Veen that prevailed, handing his more experienced opponent a 6-3 loss, averaging 92.64 to Barney's mere 84.
