After his surprise win at the World Darts Championship, David Munyua has earned not only sporting recognition but also praise at the highest political level. Kenyan president William Samoei Ruto publicly congratulated the 30-year-old on his sensational first-round victory at the World Darts Championship in London.
On Thursday at Alexandra Palace, Munyua produced one of the biggest shocks in recent World Championship history. The debutant trailed Belgium’s Mike De Decker by two sets but battled back convincingly and turned the match around. The comeback was not only a sporting upset, but also a historic moment for the African nation.
By qualifying for the Worlds, Munyua had already made history as the first Kenyan ever to step on the Ally Pally stage. His win made that milestone even more significant and sparked widespread attention back home. President Ruto amplified that spotlight with a personal message on social media.
"Congratulations David Munyua on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship. By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history."
According to Ruto, Munyua’s achievement goes beyond sporting success. "You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage."
The president ended his message with a clear call ahead of the next round. "As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home."
