Mervyn King has began his 2021/22 PDC World Darts Championship with an epic comeback to see off Ryan Joyce 3-2 in sets.
King had the crowd behind him as he reeled off nine straight legs to book his place in the last 32 in a remarkable win by 'The King' who was staring down the barrel at defeat.
Joyce completed the opening set with a 65 checkout as his average sat on 101 with 75% on the doubles with a ‘Relentless’ start from the Newcastle ace. A 180 to pressure from King was rendered null and void from Joyce who pinned 84 to hold.
An 86 checkout saw Joyce up his average to 105 with 5/7 on the doubles as he went one away from a 2-0 sets lead. He missed 161 on the bull but King could not take out 121 and Joyce returned for double eight and the set.
A 120 checkout saw King hold throw as he aimed to find a way back into the tie. Joyce missed 72 on his throw and King continued a run of three consecutive legs to take the third set and halve the deficit.
The crowd got really behind King and he made it six legs in a row to make it 2-2. He broke throw in the requisite set with a 52 checkout to go one away where he was throwing for the match. A 110 checkout saw him claim victory in an unlikely comeback.
