Lourence Ilagan has successfully defended his title at the PDC Asian Championship. It earns the Filipino dart player a spot at the Grand Slam of Darts, the tournament where he made his debut last year.
The Asian Tour season concluded this weekend with the PDC Asian Championship. The best darts players on the circuit - together with a few qualifiers - competed in the final tournament. It was also a lucrative event, because a World Championship spot and participation in the Grand Slam of Darts was waiting for the winner. The runner-up would also qualify for the World Cup of Darts.
The PDC Asian Championship began with a group stage match. Ilagan easily won his group matches against Balagat Sonny Milo (5-1) and Jia Xing Phung (5-2). Familiar names such as Alexis Toylo, Paul Lim, Man Lok Leung, Paolo Nebrida, former Tour Card holder Christian Perez and two-time women's world champion Mikuru Suzuki also advanced to the knockout stage.
In an exciting match, Ilagan managed to win 5-3 over compatriot Perez at the last sixteen. Nebrida was surprisingly eliminated 5-3 by Sho Okano, and therefore had to wait and see if his seventh spot on the Asian Tour Order of Merit was enough to qualify for the World Cup of Darts. The same was also true for number six Man Lok Leung, who lost 6-3 to Motomu Sakai in the last eight. Leung and especially Nebrida had to hope that players from the top five would make the finals.

This was already clear after the quarterfinals, as Toylo, Lim, Ilagan and Sakai made it to the final four. These were the numbers one, five, three and two of the PDC Asian Tour Order of Merit, so Leung and Nebrida still secured a World Cup ticket. This left only the participation in the Grand Slam of Darts to be forgiven.
Lim was close to a spot in the final, but the 71-year-old Singaporean was beaten 6-5 by Toylo. Ilagan ensured a Filipino final by holding off Sakai 6-4. Ilagan was then too strong for Toylo in the final 7-4.
Thus, Ilagan will get another chance at the Grand Slam of Darts in November. Last year proved unsuccessful for "The Gunner. He lost his group matches against Dimitri van den Bergh (5-1), Keane Barry (5-3) and Luke Littler (5-3).
