Two years ago,
Luke Humphries fell short in his maiden major final, but darting destiny was on his side this time as 'Cool Hand Luke' remained just that under pressure at the
World Grand Prix.
He produced an utterly incredible win over
Gerwyn Price in the final in Leicester winning 5-2 in the end with eight 180's, three ton plus checkouts including a sumptuous 138 checkout to win and 40% on finishing doubles. Up to World Number Four and a reward for his hot streak.
Humphries was struggling early on as Price took a 2-0 lead early in the race to five. He hit an 80 checkout to go a set up.
Humphries rallied though including a 109 and double 20 for the set and he made it 1-1 before his hot streak continued with a 12-darter on double two to lead for the first time.
He missed 128 for a hold to go 2-0 up but Price couldn’t pin 91 and Humphries hit double 10 t go one away from a 2-1 lead.
Price hit 71 to register a first leg of the set but Humphries threw for the lead and claimed it before doubling it up in set two with a 69 checkout. Humphries missed three for a 3-1 lead but pinned it on return for 3-1 in sets.
A 170 checkout saw Humphries lead the next set with a break. He missed four darts though for a hold and Price hit back with a 117.
Price missed 126 for the set but Humphries missed 89 for it and Price made it 3-2. To begin the next set though Humphries broke with a 66 checkout to go one leg away from a 4-2 lead.
Price made it 2-2 but Humphries was throwing for it. Despite pressure, he took it and was only one away. Humphries levelled up at 1-1 in a pivotal set for Price to stay in the clash.
Price hit an 86 checkout to go 2-1 up but it was a hold. Humphries missed 113 for 2-2 but returned for double five to seal the deal and make Price serve it out. Price couldn’t keep in it and Humphries hit an incredible 138 for the victory.
