Luke Humphries thinks it's a "shame" that no Scottish players are competing in this year's Premier League Darts. The world number one is one of the headliners on Thursday night at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, where the second night of the Premier League Darts will be played.

The Englishman has had much support from Peter Wright in recent years during his rise to the top of darts. But for the first time in 15 years, no Scottish darter has been selected for the prestigious competition. That means the 11,000 Scottish fans at the OVO Hydro won't be able to cheer on a compatriot, and that feels a bit strange for Humphries.

“I really like the Scottish people. I think they are really good. They are always up for a laugh. They are a great craic. Always create a great atmosphere. I am looking forward to playing there. It’s a shame there are no Scots in the Premier League. There are so many great Scots over the last ten years who have played in it. Unfortunately the standard has not been there from them.''

According to Humphries, there was really only one player who could have gotten an invitation. "Gary Anderson is the only one who would have been asked. If he would have played, it would have been great. Of course, it’s a shame there are none of them in it.''

Gold darts worth £30,000 for a nine darter

In addition to the battle for points in the Premier League, the players also have a chance to win a special bonus. Tournament sponsor BetMGM has in fact put up a gold set of darts worth a whopping £30,000 in store for the player who throws a nine darter.

Humphries had to swallow for a moment when he heard this news. ''“I wish you hadn’t told me about that – as I probably won’t hit one!,'' he joked. ''£30,000 worth of gold? Is it?''

The Englishman praises the big companies that invest in the sport of darts and make the events bigger and bigger. “BetMGM have been a massive, massive bonus for us as a sponsor. It’s like Paddy Power with the Worlds. They make the tournament better. It’s all a bit of fun, it’s great. We all want to win. The sponsors that the PDC have brought to the majors have made it even better I think.''

For Humphries, however, it is not about the financial value of the gold darts. “Little incentives like that, it’s very nice for them to do that. For me it’s not about the money or what they are worth. I want to win those darts for the fact it would be nice to have them in your house. Little things like that are really nice. I’d rather have that than £30,000 in cash.''
