Predictions
As finals night comes along, we canvassed our writers for predictions in regards to the winner of the
Premier League Darts.
Samuel Gill, writer for DartsNews.com sees a surprise final of sorts. But not too much so. "I think the media narrative will be skewed slightly not in their favour. They will of course want a
Luke Littler v
Luke Humphries final. But I don't think that's what we will get I think it will be Humphries v Price in the final."
"Price's previous hoodoo over the lynchpin of darts is too much to not notice and he is always up for the big occasion. It's now time to put up or shut up so to speak and I think that he manages to find a way past him and into the final. While I think Humphries will be ran close by
Nathan Aspinall. But that he technically used his nine lives in seeing off
Michael van Gerwen and Humphries will be too strong over the distance."
"My champion though will be
Luke Humphries finally seeing the spotlight on him over
Luke Littler. 11-8 win over Price."
Littler favourite but not with our writers
Pieter Verbeek, writer for DartsNieuws.com also sees Humphries winning but sees a repeat of last year's final.
"We find ourselves in a similar situation to last year, when
Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith were seen as the main threats to the two Lukes. This year, it's
Nathan Aspinall and
Gerwyn Price who will try to prevent a clash between the world’s No. 1 and No. 2.
"To be honest, I don’t see that happening. Price may have a strong record against
Luke Littler, but The Nuke has proven time and again that when it truly matters, he delivers. Aspinall, on the other hand, normally falls short in scoring power against
Luke Humphries, who rarely misses too much chances on the doubles.
"So I believe we’re heading for a repeat of last year’s final. And quietly, I have a feeling there might be a twist. I think Humphries edges it this time, taking the title with an 11–9 victory."
Nicolas Gayer, writer for DartsNews.DE though sees a repeat. "It's probably the most boring of all answers, but I can't see any way around a final showdown between the two Lukes - with one small exception:
Luke Littler's choice of setup. In recent months there has only been one scenario that has made Luke Littler vulnerable to his opponents: experimenting with his darts setup. And the reigning world champion has already announced to SkySports that he may also want to deviate from his usual setup on tonight's final evening. Regardless of whether it is ‘only’ a different tip, a different colour of barrel or a different version of his flight shaft system: Luke Littler is always at his most dominant when he unpacks his ‘original’ setup: 23 gram Generation 1 barrels, Intermediate K-Flex and 42 mm tips. This decision could tip the scales - but I expect the best player in the world to make the right decision on one of the biggest darts nights of the year.
"Luke Littler will therefore secure his ticket to the final in a duel with
Gerwyn Price before
Luke Humphries takes on
Nathan Aspinall to set up a rematch of last year's final.
"I'm expecting a showdown in the final that will live up to all its expectations. A battle of the two best darts players in the world - a 180 show, a festival of high finishes, maybe even a touch of 9-dart-brilliance? In the end, I think
Luke Littler will prevail 11-8 and secure his second Premier League crown in as many years."
A point also shared by Kieran Wood, writer for DartsNews.com. "It sounds like a cliché, but it really is true that any of the four players could win, and it wouldn’t be a surprise. Littler obviously the man to beat as reigning champion and table topper, but all three of Humphries, Aspinall and Price are more than capable of winning the title if they have a good night.
"If I’m picking with my heart, I’d love to see Price take the title. Two nine-darters this year mean he heads to the O2 Arena in some of his best form in a long while, and for someone of the Welshman’s undoubted brilliance, he has had a surprising lack of TV success since winning his world title.
"Using my head though, it is hard to see past Littler. Probably the best chance to stop Littler is with Price in the semi-finals, as the world champion has been shown to have something of a mental advantage over both Humphries and Aspinall."
