Although Luke Littler narrowly missed out on a second Premier League victory Thursday night, he left Exeter with a new record to his name.
The 18-year-old darts sensation narrowly lost 6-4 in the final to world champion and world number one, Luke Humphries. Still, Littler managed to impress with his dominant play and setting a new record.
On his way to the final, Littler defeated both Stephen Bunting and Nathan Aspinall with convincing performances. His quarterfinal against Bunting was particularly special, as in it he threw no fewer than ten 180 scores. That is a new record in the current Premier League format.
Bunting produced six 180s himself, bringing the total in the match to 16. This marked another record: the highest number of combined maximum scores in a Premier League match.
His impressive form continued in the semifinals against Aspinall, in which he scored a convincing 6-2 victory with a stunning average of 109.67. And all this while recovering from an emotional moment prior to the match. During his walk-on, a fan appeared to push aside his mother Lisa as she tried to give him a hug from the VIP section, something that visibly angered Littler.
Now the young darter sets his sights on the UK Open this weekend in Minehead. "Happy with how I played across my games tonight and good to get more premier league points after making the fina. Ready for the UK Open,'' he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The UK Open, also known as the FA Cup of Darts, has a top prize of a whopping £110,000. Last year, Littler was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Australian Damon Heta, but this time he hopes to clinch the title. As one of the 32 highest seeded players in the world, Littler will enter the fourth round of the tournament.
