Luke Littler saw a long winning streak come to an end last week. After nineteen wins in a row, Gian van Veen managed to hand the 18-year-old teenage sensation a defeat.
Littler began his winning streak by winning the UK Open. There, "The Nuke" picked up a total of six wins, including an 11-2 victory over James Wade in the final. Then Littler won the weekly title in Brighton, where he again remained unbeaten for three matches.
He continued his streak by winning the Belgian Darts Open, adding another five wins to her tally. At Players Championship 5, Littler also won his first five matches, before Van Veen surprisingly won 7-6 over the reigning world champion.
Such a win streak is rare, but it is not even a fraction of the win streak that Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor once managed. In the period of late 2016 and early 2017, Van Gerwen managed to record as many as 45 wins in a row. In this period, "Mighty Mike" won the European Darts Championship, the World Series of Darts Finals, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals, the World Darts Championship and the Masters, consecutively, often with averages well above 100.
However, this series is still dwarfed by Taylor's unbeaten run in 2008, during the period when many believe "The Power" was at his best. After a defeat against Colin Osborne in June 2008, Taylor won nearly four months of every match he played, including against players such as a young Michael van Gerwen, Andy Hamilton and James Wade.
His next loss, after 59 wins and one draw, came in early October 2008 in a 1-3 defeat to Mervyn King in a Players Championship in Ireland. Along the way, he won the World Matchplay, the Las Vegas Desert Classic, the South African Masters and five floor events.
