The nominees have been announced for BBC Sports Personality of the Year with
Luke Littler again getting nominated after he narrowly missed out in 2024 on the gong which is held this year on Thursday 18 December.
Albeit Littler will no doubt decide on whether to attend depending on his chances of winning it with golfer Rory McIlroy seen as a potential shoe-in this year with bookmakers to seal the award.
Littler if he wins on opening night of the
PDC World Darts Championship could in theory attends Sports Personality anyway as it takes place a mere three days before his second round and he did last year in the midst of his World title campaign.
McIlroy likely favourite for award
Albeit Littler was seen as a potential winner last year and was defeated by Olympic gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson who will not be on the shortlist this time. McIlroy is seen as the shoe-in due to him winning a Grand Slam of all four major championships in golf which has seen him achieve a feat only done by six other men in history and also given frustration and nearly misses is the encapsulation of a now glittering career.
This despite Littler sending darts into the stratosphere again in 2025. The now 18-year-old won the World title, he won the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, UK Open, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals alone in 2025 and heads into his title defence as a huge favourite.
Others to find their way onto the list include Hannah Hampton, England women's talisman goalkeeper as well as their Euros hero Chloe Kelly. The latter is also seen as a favourite for the award alongside Littler and McIlroy.
As well as England Women's Rugby World Cup star, Ellie Kildunne and F1 champion Lando Norris who stopped the four-time champion Max Verstappen from winning a fifth drivers title just this past weekend in Abu Dhabi. In 2025, he became the 11th Briton to win the title emerging from the closest season in 15 years with the title to continue his incredible rise.
Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport,
said: "This has been a breathtaking year for sport, driven by athletes whose performances belong in the history books. Each one has delivered moments of pure brilliance that have defined 2025. It's been incredible to watch, and I can't wait to honour their achievements, and to see who the nation chooses as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025." Voting is done online on the night with the awards shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
