Luke Littler captured his seventh 2024 PDC title (including non ranking triumphs) on Wednesday after an 8-6 victory over Dutchman Wessel Nijman in a fascinating Players Championship 15 final.
The teenage sensation won the first Players Championship event of the year in February, but the subsequent 14 Players Championship tournaments were won by 14 different players. Littler thus became the first player this season to win Players Championship tournaments.
Littler began his campaign with consecutive 100+ averages in wins over Boris Krcmar and Pascal Rupprecht. The Warrington prodigy then beat Jonny Clayton to secure his place in the last 16, before reaching the last four with 6-4 victories over Rhys Griffin and Krzysztof Ratajski.
Littler continued his rise with a crushing 7-2 win over compatriot Chris Dobey. He then overcame Wessel Nijman 8-6 after Littler won three legs in a row after falling behind 6-5.
“I know what Wessel is capable of,” quipped Littler post match.
“I’ve seen him dominate the last weekend of the Development Tour, but it was a good final, and I’m happy to be the only player with two [Players Championship] titles this year!
This after he lost early at the World Matchplay and he said that he hasn't played at all since. “I loved it, the crowd was unbelievable. Have to say I was a bit nervous on stage first time. But I’ve not really picked up a dart since the World Matchplay, so to come here and win is even better.
“I’ve got to back myself to win almost everything. With the standard of the other players I probably can’t do that, but I’d love to win another major title this year.”
But he might not be back to aim for three in a row with Australia and New Zealand also on the horizon.
"Maybe I might go home tomorrow (Thursday). I'd love to go to Australia and win at least one of them. I'm looking forward to going out there. It's a new experience like everything this year."
The 17-year-old now already holds seven PDC titles. After losing the World Darts Championship final in January, Littler took his first PDC title by winning the Bahrain Darts Masters barely two weeks later. This was also followed by wins at Players Championship 2 and 15, Euro Tour titles in Belgium and Austria, a World Series title in Austria and final victory in the Premier League Darts.
