Martin Schindler made a strong sporting statement at the start of the 2026 World Darts Championship, but sparked plenty of discussion in Germany away from the oche. After his convincing 3-1 win over Stephen Burton, the German number one refused an interview with Sport1, the broadcaster airing the tournament live in Germany. The choice turned out not to be a spur-of-the-moment reaction, but a considered decision by player and management.
Schindler produced one of the strongest World Championship performances of his career at Alexandra Palace. With an average of over 99 and a composed match plan, he put last year’s early exit behind him. The 29-year-old German thus underlined his status as a mainstay at the top level and as number 13 in the world rankings. That made it all the more surprising when he did not sit down for a Sport1 interview afterward.
The explanation followed shortly after via his manager, Ioannis Selachoglou, who clarified the situation on his player’s behalf. According to Selachoglou, this is explicitly not a personal issue or a moment of frustration. “We have jointly decided not to give interviews to Sport1 at this time, and for the remainder of the Worlds,” he stated.
Selachoglou said the decision stems from a broader consideration. “This is not an impulsive move after one match,” he emphasized. “It’s a result of the way German darts has been reported on, and how that coverage has then been presented and marketed by the editorial team.” According to the manager, that was the reason to take a temporary step back.

Sporting focus first

For Schindler, the focus is entirely on performance. The German is known for his reserved demeanor and preference to let his darts do the talking. The decision to limit interviews fits that profile. In previous interviews, Schindler indicated that during a World Championship he wants as little distraction as possible and concentrates solely on his performance.
Selachoglou confirms that picture. “Martin wants the attention on his game. He has worked hard to be here and wants to use his energy where it matters most: on the stage.” The manager stressed that the door is not permanently closed, but that they have consciously chosen calm for now.

Sport1 response

In a brief statement, Sport1 expressed regret over the decision but declined to go into substantive detail. The broadcaster says it reports on darts “balanced, fair, and where necessary, critical,” and voiced the hope of welcoming Schindler again for interviews in the future.
The incident again highlights the sensitivity between elite athletes and the media, especially in a sport that is still developing in Germany. Schindler is seen as a figurehead of German darts, which makes every public step subject to added scrutiny.
In the meantime, Schindler is already looking ahead. On 12/21/2025 he returns to the Alexandra Palace stage for his second-round match at the World Darts Championship. There he will face the winner of the clash between Keane Barry and Tim Pusey.
