Cameron Menzies wasn't at his brilliant best but still moved through on his PDC
World Darts Championship debut defeating experienced campaigner, Diogo Portela 3-1 in sets.
Watched on by his partner Fallon Sherrock who he wanted to avoid in the draw, he produced four 180's and 53% on the doubles in his second World Championship of the year after reaching the semi's at the Lakeside.
A 180 and double 20 saw Menzies open up the tie with a hold. Both hit 180’s in the second leg but it was Portela who hit a 69 checkout on double six for 1-1. A 62 checkout on double 16 saw him go one away from the opening set. Sealing the set from there, Menzies pinned double 20 for 3-1.
Portela went one away from a set back on double 20. Menzies pressured leaving double 20 and when Portela missed double 11, Menzies got his chance but didn’t take it and the Brazilian hit double two for 1-1.
Portela hit a third 180 but couldn’t follow it up and Menzies hit one himself and an 83 checkout for a hold. A 52 checkout saw Menzies go one away from a 2-1 sets lead.
Portela missed 134 for a break back but returned for double five. A 137 checkout using two double 20’s saw Menzies go 2-1 up in sets.
Portela missed 170 on the bull and Menzies hit double four to hold at 1-1. He hit an 80 checkout to go one away. A 180 began Menzies throw and he hit 140 to leave 40 sealing the win on double 10.
