Michael van Gerwen withstood a formidable test with verve in the second round of the European Darts Championship. He defeated Ricardo Pietreczko at the last sixteen 10-7 thanks to an average of 104.

Thanks to a strong second session, including a 10-darter and a 12-darter, Van Gerwen took control. ''Mighty Mike'' was happy afterward that he was able to quieten the German fans quickly. ''Six thousand Germans who are against you, you have to try to quiet them down by playing well and I think I succeeded,'' he commented to Viaplay afterwards.
According to Van Gerwen, the result did not do justice to the game and should have been a lot wider. ''I think he should be very happy that he got to win so many legs, because I should have finished it earlier, but I'm not dissatisfied.''
On Sunday afternoon, Van Gerwen will take on compatriot Gian van Veen, considered the rising star in darts this year, in the quarterfinals. ''That will be a fun match,'' expects 'Mighty Mike'.
''Gian is in great form and is playing well, but I can't complain either. That Gian is in fantastic form? I don't give a damn about that. He has to be my next victim, no excuses,'' Van Gerwen said.
