Michael van Gerwen appears to be making the most of a well-earned holiday. The three-time world champion was spotted this week in Ibiza alongside British influencer Jack Kay, better known on social media as the “Ibiza Final Boss.”
The photo, shared by Kay on
Instagram, shows a relaxed and smiling Van Gerwen. It underlines once again that the Dutch star is consciously striving for a healthy balance between his hectic playing schedule and his private life.
Debate over rest or play
This is not the first time this season that Van Gerwen has set aside time for a break. He previously skipped the World Series of Darts in New York to spend a few days in Ibiza. That decision sparked considerable debate within the darts community. While some fans understood his need for rest, others felt that a player of his stature should enter as many major tournaments as possible.
On top of that, Van Gerwen has also been forced to miss several events this year. Earlier this month, he withdrew from multiple Players Championships due to an inflammation. Those physical issues made participation impossible and caused yet another interruption to his already stop-start season. Because of those withdrawals, he now ranks among the players who have pulled out of Players Championship events most often this year.
The debate over skipping tournaments was also discussed on the podcast Darts Draait Door. Former professional Vincent van der Voort, a close friend of Van Gerwen, said he respects those decisions, but would take a different approach if he were officially responsible for managing him.

“I help where I can, but he makes his own choices”
“It’s his career. I give him advice and help where I can, but ultimately he makes his own choices,” said Van der Voort. At the same time, he indicated that as a manager he would probably push for a different schedule. In his view, a more consistent playing rhythm would better serve the Dutchman’s performance levels.
Despite the criticism, Van Gerwen seems unfazed by the public debate. In the photo with Jack Kay he looks relaxed and clearly in his element. Kay has become a notable personality in Ibiza and earned the nickname “Ibiza Final Boss” thanks to his striking videos and large online reach. He also recently stepped into the boxing ring, where he defeated Jordan McCann on the undercard of the fight between Tommy Fury and Eddie Hall.
After his holiday, a crucial stretch of the season awaits Van Gerwen. With several major ranking events and televised tournaments on the horizon, he will need to get back up to speed quickly. The Dutchman will hope he has put his physical issues behind him and can fully focus on chasing new successes.
For now, one thing seems clear: Van Gerwen is deliberately choosing moments of downtime amid the demands of professional darts. Whether that approach proves to be the right one will become clear over the remainder of the season.
