Mike de Decker has reached the quarter-finals at the
World Grand Prix after a brilliant performance. With a resounding 3-0 victory over darts legend
Gary Anderson, 'The Real Deal' made it to the last eight of a major tournament for the first time in his career.
It is De Decker's second major win at this tournament. In the first round, the Belgian had already caused a surprise by eliminating Damon Heta after a sudden-death leg. Heta is number six in the world, while Anderson is number 24.
The statistics De Decker was able to provide after his match were more than excellent by World Grand Prix standards. He recorded an average of 95.74 and a finishing percentage of 60 percent. The opening percentage was 39%, with De Decker opening the leg with his first dart in 31% percent of the legs.
De Decker took the first leg with a 13-darter, then took advantage with a 74 finish after Anderson missed a dart at a double. De Decker then took the set 3-0 with a 17-darter.
In the second set, Anderson got on the scoreboard for the first time via a 67 finish. The next three legs also went with the darts, leading to a fifth leg in set two. Anderson got to start that one, but needed as many as six darts to open the leg. Decker was gone with the first dart and won the set with a 120 finish.
The win did not cause any nerves for the Belgian. He started the third set with a 15-darter and took a 2-1 lead with a brilliant 160 finish. Anderson kept himself in the match with an 85 finish, but had to bow out a leg later. With a 12-darter, De Decker pulled the trigger.
On Friday night, De Decker may return to the stage at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester. Then he will play the winner of the match between Gerwyn Price and James Wade in the next round of this double-in double-out tournament.
