The Netherlands are still one of the teams to beat at the
World Cup of Darts. With a victory over Northern Ireland,
Danny Noppert and
Dirk van Duijvenbode qualified for the semi-finals.
The Dutch duo had already left Brazil (5-0 in pairs) and Ireland (2-0 after singles) chanceless in the first two rounds. The tie with Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan was also decided in the singles.
With a short format it is important to use the few chances you get. Noppert did that nicely in the first single against Gurney, when the Northern Irishman left three darts unused for 3-2. 'The Freeze' then broke him on double 10 and closed the match with an 82 finish.
Van Duijvenbode then had the chance to finish against Dolan and took an immediate lead. After that 'Aubergenius' got a bit sloppy. He missed three chances to break and saw Dolan equalize via tops. The History Maker' even took the lead after Van Duijvenbode missed six doubles.
In terms of scoring , 'The Titan' was dominant against the former World Grand Prix finalist, but also in the fourth leg the doubles let him down. Van Duijvenbode squandered his four break chances and saw Dolan make it 1-3 via double 16. In the fifth leg the Dutchman finally hit a double again. With a 92 finish he made it 2-3, and with a brilliant 153 finish he made it 3-3.
Van Duijvenbode then finished off the deciding leg with a 15-darter, so the Netherlands will face Wales or host nation, Germany in the semi-finals.
