O'Connor cruises past Williams, home hope Galliano sets up Wright clash after superb Vandenbogaerde win

The first round has begun at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy with routine wins so far for William O'Connor, Craig Galliano and Jason Lowe who reach the second round on the Rock.

While Galliano's World Cup teammate, Justin Hewitt was unable to play this afternoon due to illness, he anchored home hopes with a terrific 6-2 win over Mario Vandenbogaerde.

Missed darts at doubles were a theme of the match for the Belgian who missed 14 in all including two to seal the opening leg which Galliano took to break and steal a march. He broke again at 4-1 with a missed dart from 76 allowing the former footballer to score the next blow and go two away.

He went 5-1 up but Vandenbogaerde attempted a mini revival with a 121 checkout on the bull only to miss a 125 checkout and Galliano returned to hit double 16.

While O'Connor who needs to reach the Quarter-Finals in Gibraltar to reach the European Championship made a superb start.

Another game dominated by missed doubles, Williams hit 1/9 as O'Connor punished the wasteful effort and pinned a 125 checkout to seal it with a 97 average, three 180's and two ton plus checkouts in a superb opener.

He was joined by Lowe who also eased through seeing off Manuel Vilerio who averaged only 69 with 2/12 on his doubles and had Lowe not missed 19 darts at double himself, it could have been even more comprehensive for the Cradley Heath ace who moves into the second round.
