"Of course I would" - 63-year-old Phil Taylor up for dream match with 17-year-old Luke Littler

For Luke Littler, nothing seems impossible lately. The likelihood of surpassing Phil Taylor's record of 16 World Darts Championship titles does seem slim however.

Taylor ended his professional career with the PDC in 2018. His list of honors includes 16 World Championship titles, 16 World Matchplays, 11 World Grand Prixs and many more. The 17-year-old Littler already won several tournaments in his first six months within the PDC. The question is sometimes already being asked: will he eventually be able to break some of Taylor's records.

Currently, Taylor is still in sporadically in action on the World Seniors Darts Tour, although this is his final year before he retires from that circuit also. Littler recently expressed enthusiasm for a possible dream match between the pair, saying: "I met him once. Our sponsor, Target, who make our darts and stuff. That's when I met him. I've not seen him after the World Championships or anything," The Nuke told Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, whilst over in the United States. "I've seen his interviews when he's speaking about me and other things. He's just a legend of the sport. For him to be talking about me, it's just crazy to think."

So, would Taylor himself be up for a match with the teenage darting sensation? "I can't do it at the minute [following an injury], but will I do it? Of course I would," Taylor told Spin Bet recently. "He's brilliant. So far, he's handling the pressure brilliantly, the lad is. He's kept his feet on the ground, he's got good parents, a good manager around him and he's doing brilliant. I love him."

"Listen, if you're old enough, you're good enough. It all depends on Luke (on how good he can become), if he remains dedicated and keeps practising and doing what he is doing, then he will be alright," continues the Power. Yet Taylor does warn of a potential pitfall. "It's just if he gets distracted by things, thinking about different things and doing different things and spreading himself a bit too thin. Everyone will want a piece of him, you see. He needs to listen to his manager and keep grounded."
