Michael van Gerwen will not represent the Netherlands at the 2025
World Cup of Darts. The three-time world champion confirmed the news in an exclusive
interview with Dartsnews.com shortly after his victory at the
German Darts Grand Prix. And it wasn’t just a one-off absence - Mighty Mike hinted that his time in the Dutch World Cup team might be over for good.
It was something of an Easter miracle on Monday night at Munich’s Zenith venue: Van Gerwen, who has recently made headlines more for dips in form and lingering injury concerns, claimed his 38th European Tour title in spectacular fashion. The Dutchman capped off a dominant weekend by beating fellow countryman
Gian van Veen 8–5 in the final.
Speaking exclusively to
Dartsnews.com after the win, van Gerwen had high praise for the 22-year-old: “He’s a fantastic player and definitely someone to keep an eye on in the future.”
But when asked whether he might team up with van Veen for the World Cup of Darts, Van Gerwen gave a surprising answer: “I won’t be part of the team this year – I’m on holiday,” he said with a wide grin to
DartsNews.com.
Then came a sentence that really caught the attention: “Maybe it’s an option in the future – but you never know what might happen. Maybe I’ll never play in the World Cup of Darts again.”
This means the German crowd at Frankfurt’s Eissporthalle will have to do without the three-time world champion this year. Based on the current world rankings, the Netherlands are set to be represented by
Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen. The tournament will take place from June 12 to 15 in the heart of Europe.
With Van Gerwen out, it's now likely to be a fight between Danny Noppert,
Dirk van Duijvenbode and the aforementioned Van Veen to the two spots on offer in the Netherlands World Cup of Darts team.
