In “On This Day In …” DartsNews looks back on a tournament or performance of a player on a specific date. This time a return back only three years to August 13, 2017.
It was the day that Kyle Anderson entered the history books as the winner of a televised tournament. The Original became the surprise winner of the Auckland Darts Masters, one of the World Series events.
Anderson started the tournament with a 6-4 win over Gary Anderson. He immediately showed good form, as he averaged almost 103 in that match. He continued his run with a 10-9 victory over Simon Whitlock.
Then James Wade also had to bow his head to the Australian ace. On the other side of the draw, his compatriot impressed. Corey Cadby beat Peter Wright (6-4), Michael Smith (10-5) and Phil Taylor (11-8) to make it an Australian final.
The final seemed to go Cadby's way, as the former World Youth Champion took a 4-1 lead. Later, Cadby would also take a 10-9 lead. Anderson levelled and decided the final with a 68 finish in the 21st leg.
