Kevin Doets was far from his best against Nathan Aspinall in the second round of the 2025 Austrian Darts Open on Saturday night. But with Aspinall himself struggling, the truth is Doets didn't need to be. Despite averaging just 85.51, the Dutchman took a relatively comfortable 6-2 win to set up a meeting with German number one Martin Schindler this afternoon.
After a slow and cagey start, it was Doets who took control of the tie. Despite averaging only in the low 80s during the early exchanges, the Dutchman managed to break Aspinall's throw in the fourth leg, establishing a 3-1 lead early on. Although neither player ever truly found top gear, it was Doets who remained the more consistent and as such, dumped out the recent tournament winner on the Euro Tour in the process.

"This was one of the weirdest games I've played in my life I think," laughed an honest Doets in his post-match interview afterwards. "We were both feeling the heat of course and that shouldn't be an excuse, but we were both not playing like we could. He missed a lot of doubles, I missed a lot of doubles, but I also hit the right doubles. It was, yeah, just a really weird game so I'm happy to get over the line."
"When I was practising, it's a bit colder down there in the practice area. But the moment I got up here (the stage ed.), both him and me said it. It's just so warm and it was really hard to focus and to get the grip right," continues Doets. "But I hit my doubles when I had to and he didn't."
And wins over Aspinall are something that are happening with growing regularity for Doets in recent times. It's now five victories on the spin for the Dutchman against the former World Matchplay champion. "But I don't think that matters today though," he concludes. "It was just a weird game from both of us and like I said, I'm just happy to win."
